Frequently Asked Questions
Q. I can't hear any sound.
Check that your device is not in silent mode and the volume is turned up. MultiTuneKeys plays through the standard iOS audio output, so if music plays from other apps, it should play here too. If you are using Bluetooth headphones, make sure they are connected and selected as the output device.
Q. How do I switch between tunings?
The tuning selector is in the control panel at the top of the screen. Tap the current tuning name to bring up a list of all available temperaments. Changes take effect immediately — you can switch while a note is sounding to hear the difference.
Q. What does the HOLD button do?
A sustain function. When HOLD is engaged, notes you press continue sounding even after you release the key. Tap a sustained note again to release that single note, or turn HOLD off to release all sustained notes at once. This is especially useful as a pitch reference: orchestral and choral musicians can sustain a note (or chord) in a chosen tuning while playing or singing along, with both hands free.
Q. What is the "Anchor" setting?
Anchor determines which note's frequency stays fixed when a key-based tuning (Just, Pythagorean, Meantone) is selected. Anchor: A=440 (default) keeps A always at the reference pitch and derives the tonic from it — this matches historical tuning practice and modern ensemble convention. Anchor: Tonic keeps the tonic at its equal-tempered frequency and derives A from it — this lets you compare different tunings while keeping the same "C" (or whichever tonic) across all of them. The setting is shown next to the A= picker on the main screen, and also available in Settings.
Q. What does the pitch bend wheel do?
The wheel on the left side of the keyboard continuously bends the pitch of any notes currently playing. Drag upward or downward to raise or lower the pitch smoothly. When playing a single note, the frequency display at the top of the screen follows the bend in real time. The bend range (how many semitones the wheel covers at full deflection) can be set in the control panel.
Q. Can I design my own tuning?
Yes. Select "Custom" from the tuning menu and you will be able to edit the cent value of each scale degree. Your custom tuning is saved between sessions.
Q. How can I quickly load a known temperament as a starting point in the Custom editor?
Open the Custom tuning sheet and look for the Templates button in the right sidebar (the 4th slot below your three user presets). Tapping it opens a menu of built-in temperaments: Just Intonation, Pythagorean, 1/4-comma Meantone, Werckmeister III, and Kirnberger III. Selecting one loads that temperament's cents-from-equal values into the sliders, which you can then modify freely as a starting point.
Q. How do I remove the advertisement?
Open the settings screen and tap "Remove Ads". This is a one-time in-app purchase. Once purchased, the banner advertisement is hidden permanently on all devices signed into the same Apple ID. You can restore the purchase on a new device by tapping "Restore Purchases" on the same screen.
Q. Why does a note sometimes sound slightly different when I play it in a different context?
In most historical tunings, each note has a fixed frequency — so the same key always produces the same pitch. However, some tunings (such as just intonation) have internal trade-offs: a pitch that sounds "pure" against one chord may sound slightly out against another. This is a property of the tuning itself, not a bug — it's how the app is designed to work.
Q. Where is the loudness compensation setting?
Open the settings screen. The curve adjusts perceived loudness across frequencies. Each waveform has its own default, tuned to sound natural with its harmonic content. You can override the value per waveform if you prefer.
